Mini Satellite Attitude Determination and Control System
HOW Does IT FUNCTION?
Controlled by a patented magnetic field design, a spherical motor is capable of spinning in X, Y, and Z axes. Moreover, bias-currents are applied to each phase of the motor, this enables the motor to combine 3-axis magnetorquers into this device as well.
Application: Attitude Control
Every satellite in orbit requires precise orientation control along the X, Y, and Z axes. This is the so-called attitude control, which is essential for optical sensing satellites and broad-band communication satellites. To achieve this, we use a tactical grade gyroscope and fine sun sensor as the attitude determination sub-system; the spherical motor functions as the attitude actuator.

Nowadays, the space industry has faced two major obstacles, rocket and satellite costs. To tackle the second problem, satellite minimization is key. Among all sub-systems, attitude control devices are the last components that can’t shrink their size due to physical limitations. Thus, we developed spherical motor technology to replace three motors by only one. Within our unique design, this device can have 1/3 weight, size, and power consumption compared to the traditional system. Finally, we believe we may enable the space industry for wider commercial applications by our invention.
